The Architecture of Labourd
The village of Sare and this Museum are situated in Labourd, one of the 7 provinces of the Basque Region.
Sare, officially classified as "One of the most beautiful village of France", boasts green countryside, typically, smaller areas are outlined by walls of vertically placed sandstone slabs, the countryside dotted with old, half timbered farm houses, such as "Lapitzia", situated on the crest of La Rhune, or in little groups as we see at Lehenbiscay and Istilarte; the architecture of this area is quite remarkable.
More than any other, the Basque house serves as a source of identity; it's this that gives to the family which lives there its family name. The house also defines a space of great symbolism, a place in times gone by of rites and rituals practised by the heads of the house. *
